President Receives Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq

President Barham Salih welcomed Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Iraq, to the Presidential Office in Baghdad today.
The President emphasized the international organization’s critical role in Iraq, citing efforts the UN has made to support the democratic process across the country as well as highlighting the importance of Iraq as a potential trusted actor that could help reduce regional tension and consolidate international peace and security.

President Mourns Passing of Secretary General of the Union of Iraqi Writers

President Salih sent a letter of condolences today to the national cultural and literary community upon hearing about the tragic passing of the Secretary General of the Union of Iraqi Writers, Ibrahim al-Khayat.
The following is the text of the condolence from President Salih:

With heavy hearts, we are stunned to learn the tragic news about the passing of one of Iraq’s great writers and poets, Ibrahim al-Khayat.

The Foreign Minister Receives Telephone Call from his British Counterpart

Foreign Minister Mr. Mohamad A. Alhakim received a phone call from the new British Foreign Secretary Mr. Dominic Raab.
Mr. Alhakim congratulated him on the occasion of his appointment as UK Foreign Secretary.
The two ministers discussed ways of enhancing cooperation in various fields, especially security and intelligence coordination and efforts to combat terrorism, and serve common interests Of the two friendly countries.

The Foreign Ministry rejects and condemns the Bahraini Foreign Minister’s Tweet about the recent attacks on Arab territories and the Popular Mobilization Forces by Zionist enemy under the pretext of self-defense.
The Popular Mobilization Forces stood by our armed forces, the police (local and federal), the Peshmerga, and the tribal fighters to defend our holy land and made great sacrifices to liberate the cities of Iraq, and to defeat Da’esh terrorist gangs.

Foreign Minister Summons Chargé d’affaires of United States Embassy to Baghdad

Foreign Minister Mohamad A. Alhakim summoned the Charge d’affaires at the US Embassy in Baghdad, Mr. Brian McFeeters in the absence of the US Ambassador in Iraq.
During the meeting they reviewed the progress of bilateral relations between Baghdad and Washington, and ways to strengthen them to serve the interests of the two countries, in addition to issues related to intelligence and military cooperation and the fight against terrorism according to the priorities of Iraq and the vision of the Commander in Chief of the Iraqi armed forces.

Foreign Minister Receives European Union Ambassador on Occcasion of Ending his Diplomatic Missions in Iraq

The Foreign Ministry Holds Memorial Service for its Martyrs

The Foreign Ministry held a memorial service for its martyrs who were victims of a terrorist bombing in 2009.
The Foreign Minister laid a wreath at the memorial that the ministry held for this tragic incident, and delivered a speech in which he commended the martyrs, recalling the active role of Iraqi diplomacy in the fight against terrorism.

The President Mourns with Victims of Anfal Genocide

President Salih met today with dozens of family members who lost loved ones during the infamous Anfal genocide of the 1980s.

Taking care to listen to all their concerns in the Al Salam Palace in Baghdad, the President stated clearly that this violence was a genocidal act aimed at the Kurdish people and will forever be a wound that is never fully healed in the hearts of all Iraqis. Iraq will take part in the talks in Astana on Thursday, which is one of the important paths of dialogue between the parties of the Syrian-Syrian conflict, which could lead to an end to the violence in the country and bring positive results.

We welcome any efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis and strongly support its resolve by peaceful means. We express our readiness to coordinate with the countries of the world in order to end Syrian people’s suffering which entered the ninth year.
